Photos by Kate McCarthy

Numerous slides of scenes on Mount Hood have been taken over the years by Kate McCarthy, the founder of Friends of Mount Hood. Some of these pictures record beautiful alpine scenes; however, other pictures dramatically illustrate the damage done to the mountain by development.

Five of Kate's photos follow.

This picture shows the destruction of white bark pine to create a ski run on what was formerly a high altitude forested ridge. Communities of white bark pine at high altitudes are rare on the mountain.
During the summer, hikers are awarded with beautiful views of meadows with wildflowers in bloom.
This picture was taken during the construction of the Cascade Express chairlift at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area.
The construction of ski lifts and ski trails contributes to an increase in sediment deposited in nearby streams and wetlands. The damage to wetlands is often irreparable. Years ago Kate took this picture of a stream bed that was filled with logs from trees cut to form a ski run.
This photo is of a riparian area in an undisturbed state.
