Friends of Mount Hood
October 2009 Newsletter

Message from Kate McCarthy, founder of Friends of Mount Hood and Chairperson Emerita
Greetings!

Finally a newsletter! It has been too long since the last one and as usual, much has happened. First we want to remind you of the annual meeting.

Friends of Mount Hood Annual Meeting
November 9, 2009, 7 pm to 8:30 pm
Mazamas Mountaineering Center Auditorium
527 SE 43rd Avenue, Portland
(cross street SE Stark)

There is much to talk about so save the date, and please come. We need your support with our continuing efforts to protect Mt. Hood.
We are thankful that the wilderness bill finally passed both Houses of Congress and was signed by President Obama on March 30, 2009. Thanks to all who worked on this important legislation particularly Earl Blumenauer and Ron Wyden. Friends of Mt. Hood and sixteen other conservation groups worked long and hard on the issue for many years. We are grateful for the leadership of Regna Merritt and Erik Fernandez of Oregon Wild. It is a wonderful addition to the protection of wild lands in Oregon. This bill will be discussed in its relation to Mt. Hood at our Annual Meeting.

In our last newsletter we mentioned that we were involved in mediation with Mt. Hood Meadows on the issue of parking expansion. We feel this process worked out well and that we achieved a better solution for the mountain. However the process took a long time, and as the process requires confidentiality, we could not keep people informed of our progress. The Consent Decree has now been signed and Chris Winter will cover the Settlement Agreement on parking at our meeting.

Last week we mailed our usual postcard announcing our Annual Meeting. Please note that Karl Anuta will bring you up to date on wetland restoration, Lori Ann Burd and Amy Harwood of BARK will give a presentation on Off Highway Vehicles and the Palomar LNG pipeline and I will have a slide show to bring you full color impressions of the recent happenings on Mt. Hood.

Please come to support this informative meeting concerning our much loved mountain and please continue your generous financial support of this important cause.

I’m looking forward to seeing you.
